The Journals of Sarab Affan
By Jabra Ibrahim Jabra

The Journals of Sarab Affan      Jabra Ibrahim Jabra

This is the second novel by Jabra I have eaten its pages rapidly. The first one was Hunters in a Narrow Street.

Sarab is a strong woman has her own philosophy and principles to live and fight for; Strong woman with will and aim.

As I like Jabar's hopeful positive endings, I like his female characters, they are special, capable, thoughtful, and not typical weak Arabic women.

Though Sarab and I have different philosophies, yet we have almost the same characters.

Kitab Al-Zina (The Book of Adornment)

 By Abu hatim Al-Razi, 322 H

It is talking about the Islamic words and their meanings and use before Islam and how they used after it.

The book is a unique reference in this subject. It considers the first brick of the Arabic Islamic Semantics, written in the beginnings of the fourth Hijra century.

Though the author died in 322H, his style is so easy and simple, not to mention delicious.

It consists of three volumes:

- The first volume is a kind of introduction about Arabic language in general.

- The second volume is about the Islamic words.

- The third volume is about a different subject; about Islamic sects; definition for each. By the way, the author was Shii Ismaili.

Also, the book is well revised by two revisers, the first one to the first-two volumes, and the second one to the third volume.

I finished the first volume, which I consider the first step in my road of studying Arabic words.

I feel so happy, I feel I am the smartest and prettiest woman on the whole earth, and this kiss is especially for me

Woman and Language

&
The Illusioned Culture (Woman and Language 2)
By
Abdullah Al-Ghathami

Woman and Language    The Illusioned Culture    Abdullah Al-Ghathami

In his tow books Al-Ghathami is trying to prove that man has dominated language and turned it to masculine one, putting woman aside.

I found his theory and his evidences inconvincible; most of them built on exaggerations and vivid imagination, and I can use his same evidences to prove the opposite of his.

Man is not god to have such power over language. Actually it is the language who controls us, we human being, imprisons us by its rules, and words.

Language is a divine secret; and who could comprehend such a secret?

Bedouin in Western Eyes

By Ammar Al-Sanjar

Bedouin in Western Eyes
Ammar Al-Sanjar

A study about the image of Bedouin in western travelers' eyes; it is the same negative stereotype of  orientalists towards Arab.

Anyway I enjoyed reading the study.

What a Pity     Ibtisam Shakush

A Syrian novel about a bribe-taker opportunist crafty governmental employee, reflecting the corrupted reality.

Maybe it is not a masterpiece but not so bad too.

From Andalusia to America:

The Andalusian Muwashshah ( or Strophic Poetry) and Its Impact on Western Lyrical Poetry

By Abdul-Nabi Isstaif

From Andalus to America      Abdul-Nabi Isstaif

A small book about the effect of Andalusian Terza Rima on Western Lyric Poetry such as troubadour, then how it reached America through following this style by Ezra Pound.

The whole book makes me remember an outstanding band, outstanding in its music lyrics, and even clothes; Blackmore's Night. I believe it has something of troubadour's style which means a very far echo of the ancient Andalusian spirit flowing from its tones.

Listen and imagine:

The Forgotten Queens of Islam

By Fatima Mernissi

The Forgotten Queens of Islam     Fatima Mernissi

Its a book about the forgotten queens of Islam. Mernissi is a funny smart sarcastic writer, I enjoy her naughty style, however, her book is not really a study or research, but rather a personal reading of her.

1984
By
George Orwell

1984
George Orwell

It is a classic novel published in 1948 foreseeing the future in 1984. About a regime dominates the every detail of its people, watching everything even their facial gestures. It dominates their emotions and thoughts and convincing them in everything it wants even 2+2= 5. Changing seems impossible forever... (Beware; Big Brother is watching you)

It is a nightmarish horrible novel. Presenting the bestial disgusting face of humanity.

It is almost true, and human has been always more furious and cruel than animals. However, there is always the hope of changing. In stream of history no nation, no regime, no domination could remain forever. Allah made it like that to make life keep on earth or else it would be an ultimate destruction. Allah said: "Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there would be surly have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure." 22/40

It is a very important novel and everyone should read it...

The Arab Image in Turkish Eyes

By Ibrahim Dakuki

The Arab Image in Turkish Eyes
Ibrahim Dakuki

It is a study about the Arab image in Turkish eyes. In short, the image is neither very positive nor very negative; pulling back and forth between the typical western racial image towards Arab and the respect and love towards their brothers who posses the Arabic- Quran language.

The study is old from 1995, and full of repetition, which severely irritates me.

I didn't enjoy reading the book, but it is not so bad too.
