Talmud

The Holy Book of Judaism; History, Origins and Teachings

By Ahmed Ibesch

Talmud      Ahmed Ibesch

When I read such things I thank Allah for teaching me how to read. The book is taking me to A Hebrew spheres. How strange the similarity is with the Islamic teachings! The book is really interesting. Thanks for the translator for such a book. Hoping he could translate the whole Talmud in the future.

Samarkand

By Amin Maalouf

Samarkand     Amin Maalouf

It is a historical novel about Omar Khayyam and his famous Rubaiyaat and also about Assassin sect. Actually, the novel is so delicious . It encourages me to read the Rubaiyaat in Arabic, translated by Ahmed Rami, and in English, translated by Edward Fitzgerald, since I read the novel in English.  The novel makes me remember , also, a book I read; (The Assassins) By Bernard Lewis and translated By Suhail Zakar.

The Silence's Beauties:

In the root of the hidden and the suppressed

By Ibrhaim Mahmod

The Silence's Beauties   Ibrhaim Mahmod

The idea, which is a study about silence, is very beautiful, however, it is ruined by the style. I find it so artificial and pedantic, like the local news Actually, I have resisted leaving it many times...

Salome:

The princess who danced to kill a prophet

By Ralph Anderson

You know how I hate her: Salma vs. Salome

The book is about her life, written in a very childish way, at the end the writer manipulated the truth making her danced to save the Prophet.

I believe even the writer were tempted by her dance!

Thank God I am not a man, or else such silly movements would have washed my brain too

Avicenna or the Road to Ispahan

By Gilbert Sinoué

Avicenna or the Road to Ispahan       Gilbert Sinoué

It's a historical novel about Avicenna's life.
mmmm.... its O.K. but not woow
I have discovered that I don't like such novels... such which depends more on events than analyzing them...
Were I familiar with medicine, I would have enjoyed it more, especially by knowing the old methods of diagnostic and remedies.
Anyway the name (Avicenna) doesn't hold anymore any aura which used to adhere with his name... he may have been genius in medicine, however I didn't find in him a charming character, at all However, it is not his fault but mine and Sinoué. I, because I thought he was more than a human being like anybody else, and Sinoué because he only focused on what he desired. I felt I was fooled.

Before The Sun Is Folded up

By Jose Javier Gallego - Abu Bakr

Before The Sun Is Folded up        Jose Javier Gallego - Abu Bakr

This the forth book by Abu Bakr I've read. It is an insight into Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the light of transmission- how the message of Allah (tawhid) has transmitted from one religion to another during the course of history. It's style is different and original, especially for some sketches.

Losing my Religion: A Call for Help

By Jeffrey Lang

Losing my Religion: A Call for Help       Jeffrey Lang

In First chapter he continued his talk he started in his previous book (Even Angels Ask); about the meaning of creation, the meaning of being human, why Allah wanted us to be as we are, with our ability of good and evil, on earth...

I can't express through words how this book made me feel...

Just I closed it and kissed the picture of that wonderful man who wrote it. If he were near me, I would hug and kiss him out of happiness...

I even wrote him a very long letter thanking him for his amazing book.

This book is my favorite book at all... bye bye Demian's Herman Hesse

Since so long I have never felt in this way until I forget it; An understanding teacher refines me by his wisdom, gives me a helping hand, raises me, promotes me, guides me, answers me, explains to me. Simply, just he teaches me.

Since so long I have never felt a role model who I long to be like, even to surpass him- may he pleases by me then blesses me...

Since long time ago, a very long lonely time ago, I haven't been overwhelmed by a paternal tenderness and insight such this....

Madame Bovary

By Gustave Flaubert

Madame Bovary    Gustave Flaubert

It is about a woman who loathed her marital life then she cheated her husband! Wait! Don't judge her before reading the novel. Especially if you know that divorce wasn't allowed that days in France. No doubt cheating is unforgivable matter, however when the whole society, with its beliefs and priorities, is corrupted, then it will be unfair to condemn one person, since the whole society is guilty. In my opinion, this novel (Madame Bovary) shed the light on how the society was, if not still, disgusting...

I found it difficult a little bit since Flaubert didn't spare a tiny detail without describing; even he gave the recipes of some dishes that were in the wedding party. Oh God! Do you believe it?

Anyway, I didn't pay attention to that nor open the dictionary? I wonder who wants to know weather the heroine was wearing taffeta or messaline or whatever!

I read also the introduction about his life and how he wrote the novel. The interesting thing that the translator (Francis Steegmuller) quoted some letters he sent while he was writing the novel; thus you can see him aching, tearing, craving for the right sentences. Really, writing is an exhausting process like giving birth. But just imagine 5 years of giving birth!!
I just want to quote one letter of him: (On September1, 1852, Flaubert had written Louise: You speak about women's sufferings: I am in the midst of them. You will see that I have had to descend deeply into the well of feelings. If my book is good, it will gently caress many feminine wound; more than one woman will smile as she recognize herself in it. Oh, I'll be acquainted with what they go through, poor unsung souls! And with the secrets sadness that oozes from them, like the moss on the walls of their provincial backyards." p. xix

 Don Quijote

By Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

Don Quijote   Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

You know its a classical famous novel about the crazy Don Quijote's adventure who thought himself a knight. Anyway, I read it because some Spanish friend called me colonialized Syrian just because I didn't read it.

Now I read it; I don't think it adds anything to me. I haven't become more civilized nor better human.

How shallow his criterion was!

By the way my copy was illustrated by Gustave Dore such as

Gustave Dore

Anyway, It's not the amount of information but the good manners what matters...

The First Adventure

By Herman Hesse

The First Adventure     Herman Hesse

Herman Hesse is my favorite writer, after Jeffery Lang of course. I almost read all his works. This book is a collection of short stories. Analyzing the style it is obvious that he wrote it when he was young, because its dreamy and romantic, while his style in his old age became more profound and full of wisdom, which I like the most...

Anyway, it is a nice light work...

Adventures in Arabia

By William B. Seabrook

Adventures in Arabia        William B. Seabrook

William was an American traveler who loved the orient, so he traveled to it to live his oriental dream. This book about his journey and adventures in middle east in 1927.

The different in this orientalistic book is that there isn't that arrogant superior nasty tone of westerner towards the oriental objects. In contrast, he seemed a man in search for the truth, so he kept asking for the religions and sects. Also, he was very polite with his hosts.

It is really an interesting book

The Grand Shami's Tale

By Kazem Daghestani

The Grand Shami's Tale

An old novel was printed in 1972. I found it forgotten covered by dust on some roof in the book-shop.

It is about a Damascene Lady three hundreds years ago and her life in a grand Shami house where the whole family lived in with...

The first impression came to me after finishing the book was thanking the Lord that I am here in this time not in that time... I felt as if I had run away from the prison

May Allah shed His mercy on women... How they suffered a lot!

Orientalism

By Edward Said

Orientalism      Edward Said

It is one of the most important books about Orientalism. PhD. Abdul-nabi Isstaif told us once that this book changed the face of history. It is said "before Said's book... after Said's Book".

I tried to red it in English but I found it impossible. Actually, I could hardly understand it in Arabic, that if I really get it.

I felt I became smarter after reading it, though I have always been smart

Anyway, I believe I need to re-read it after few years to get it more.

My Name is Red
By Orhan Pamuk

My Name is Red         Orhan Pamuk

The main characters in the novel are miniaturists in the Ottoman Empire, and the events revolve around the murder of one of the painters. I describe the novel as evil one. It dragged me to the bottom and exhausted me.

Despite the fact that the style is captivating, Orhan's philosophy is intense malice. He knows how beatifies the ugliness, makes you desire the abnormality and repulsiveness. A kind of black comedy... a grotesque

From now on I will be scared each time I look to such oriental miniature

Miniature

I just don't know what to say... I sighed deeply when I finished it

They say Orhan is talented... Yes indeed, but talented as a devil

Risibles Amours (Laughable Loves)

By Milan Kundera

Laughable Loves   Milan Kundera

Collection of short erotic stories, so called (Laughable Loves), though they are neither funny nor there is any touch of love in them.

They are only about Don Juan men, which I loath the most.

The black philosophy of Kundera which repulses me, is so ugly, nasty and disgusting.

I really hate the book

Syrian Home-Life

By Rev. Henry Harris Jessup

I found the book online.

Its is a typical orientalistic book written in 1874. His writer was a Protestant American missionary came to Syria, i.e. Lebanon and Syria, who wrote about what he saw. Did I say what he saw! It is actually his fantasies.

The book is funny and sick.

Take this story from the book: "In the beginning of the world, Satan came down to the earth with seven bags of lies, which he intended to distribute in the seven kingdoms of the earth. The first night after he reached the earth he slept in Syria, and open one of the bags, letting the lies loose in the land But while he was asleep, someone came and opened all the other bags! So that Syria got more than her share!"

Anyway, it is also full of historical events about that time.

Though the superior racism tone, I like the book. It's amusing to see how such people think about you, while you laugh about their naiveness.

Cartas a un Joven Novelista (Letters to a Young Novelist)

By Mario Vargas Llosa

Letters to a Young Novelist         Mario Vargas Llosa

It is 12 letters from the writer to a young man who wants to be a novelist, advising and directing him.

Its interesting and useful book. Te most beautiful thing is the last two lines of the book:

"Dear friend,

I am trying to tell you to forget everything I have said about the novelistic form, and start writing right now the novels."
